Pearl Harbor

The USS Arizona Memorial is part of the recently dedicated WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument. The National Monument also includes sites on Ford Island: the USS Oklahoma Memorial, USS Utah Memorial, and several historic Battleship Row mooring quays and CPO bungalows. The National Monument is located about 2 miles west of the Honolulu Airport in Pearl Harbor on the island of Oahu.

USS Bowfin

USS Bowfin (SS-287) is a fleet attack submarine that fought in the Pacific during WWII, and helped to make famous the term, “Silent Service.”  Bowfin was launched on 7 December 1942, exactly one year to the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor.  She was nicknamed the Pearl Harbor Avenger, so it is fitting that she is permanently homeported at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

Fairview Museum of History and Art

The museum holds ninety sculptures by Fairbanks, both religious and historical.  What a treasure trove of magnificent art!

This amazing old building was originally a school.  The 6th grade teacher was also the principal, and he made a new chalk drawing each month.  The next two pictures were the last ones he did in 1958.  I loved the whole feeling of the building in general.

There are several rooms of historical significance.  If you are interested in the way people lived in earlier times, you'll find this fascinating.

This couple, who are also depicted together in a larger sculpture, are Peter and Celestia Peterson, who were married for eighty-one years and ten months.  They were married when they were both eighteen years old.  He died at the age of one hundred, she at one hundred one.

There is even a prehistoric skeleton.

I really loved the series of Abraham Lincoln sculptures.

George Washington is there too!

Red Fleet

Red Fleet State Park lies at an elevation of 5,500 feet in northeastern Utah, immediately south of the Uinta Mountains. The climate is arid with hot summers and cold winters. Surrounded by red slick rock formations, the park got its name from three large Navajo sandstone outcrops that look like a fleet of ships as they jut up from the reservoir.

Plant life at the park includes juniper, various cacti, an sagebrush.

Wildlife includes badgers, bobcat, coyote, deer, and rabbit. Birds include golden eagles, hawks, bluebirds, owls, vultures, and osprey.

Redstone Castle

The 1902 castle and estate, also called Cleveholm Manor, represents a time in American history when empires were built during a nationwide drive toward industrialization.  The father of Redstone, John C. Osgood was recognized during his day as one of the six most prominent captains of industry in the US. He formed the Colorado Fuel Company, becoming the sole coal supplier to some regional railroads and furnishing high quality coking coal to precious metal smelters across the Rockies. The castle is of unique significance in Colorado, due to its style and scale. The interior and its furnishings, 75% of which are original, were crafted exclusively for Mr. Osgood.
